Karonga community hails teachers’ houses

People of Karonga Central Constituency have expressed excitement with the construction of six teacher’s houses in six primary schools.

The houses, constructed under Constituency Development Fund to the tune of K100 million, are at Chinsogholo, Ndembwera, Lemero, Ibundya, Gumi and Chiwondo primary schools in Chiwondo Zone.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, group village head Mwanyesha I said the house at Lemero Primary School will motivate teachers.

He commended the communities for their support during construction.

“However, I warn against vandalism. Parents, learners and teachers themselves are advised to take care of the house. As traditional leaders, we are always ready to contribute construction materials to any development in our areas,” said the chief.

On his part, Ndembwela Primary School head teacher Michael Kalambo commended the area’s former legislator Leonard Mwalwanda for initiating the project.

“Only six teachers have houses at the school. The rest are operating from rented houses away from the school,” he said.

Mwalwanda, who is Malawi Congress Party shadow parliamentary candidate for Karonga Nyungwe Constituency, [which belonged to Karonga Central before the redemarcation exercise] said the houses will solve accommodation challenges.

He said it was important for teachers to live close to schools.

“I thank community leaders for mobilising their subjects to contribute towards the project,” said Mwalwanda
